Advice
Go for fairtrade certified banana silk.
Banana silk
Banana silk fabric is made from 100% pure banana plant stem, therefore categorizing banana silk as a natural cellulose bast fiber.
After the banana harvest, all excess material is stripped off of the banana plant stem until only the fibers are left that are needed to make banana silk. The fibers are then dried and knotted together by using a special twisting technique. This process has very low water consumption because no additional water or land is needed to grow the raw material, as the fibers from the banana plant are technically a waste product of the banana food industry.
Banana fiber processing can also be done by retting and combing, as well as with chemical extraction methods and there is also the possibility to process banana material into a cellulosic material – which is similar to viscose.
It is very difficult to trace the use of chemicals, wastewater treatment and labour conditions during the manufacturing process of banana silk since the initial purpose of the banana plant itself was not to make fibers.
Untreated banana silk is compostable. Things like dye, toxic chemicals, blended fibers and trims can hinder its compostability.
